A solution of thyme appears more effective in the treatment of acne than the prescribed creams.

That, researchers at a meeting of the Society for General Microbiology in Dublin.

Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University tested the effect of thyme, marigold and myrrh on the Propionibacterium acne, the bacterium that causes inflammation of the skin.

All investigated solutions killed the bacteria within five minutes after exposure, but thyme was the most effective of the three.

The thyme tincture was even a greater antibacterial effect than a standard concentration of benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient in many anti-acne creams.

"To make the tincture soaks the material of the plant or herb days or even weeks in the alcohol," explains lead researcher Margarita Gomez-Escalada out. "This will attract all the active ingredients from the plant in the alcohol."

Thyme, marigold and myrrh are widely used as a natural alternative to standard acne treatments, but scientific evidence, according to Gomez-Escalada not before.

During the study had an alcohol solution as a control. The effect of the dyes was not merely due to the anti-bacterial effect of alcohol.

Gomez-Escalada hopes that more research on the effect of dyes on acne in the future will lead to a natural alternative to current treatments.

"Especially for people with sensitive skin can help. Products containing benzoyl peroxide regularly lead to side effects such as burning and irritation."
