Adrenal glands:
Every person has two adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are not, as the name would suggest, organs that assist in the functioning of the kidneys. In fact, they hardly have anything to do with the functioning of the kidney.
Adrenal glands look like slightly flattened fleshy yellowish organs the size of the last paw of your thumb. The adrenal glands weigh approximately 5 grams each and lie on top of a layer of fat on the kidneys. Each adrenal gland consists of two parts, the bark or outside (cortex) and the core or adrenal medulla (medulla). The bark contains 90% of the weight (just over 4 grams) and the marrow about 10% (slightly less than 1 gram).
Although small in size, the adrenal cortex makes three very important hormones: cortisol, aldosterone and androgens. These hormones are also called steroids. The adrenal medulla produces cathecholamines. These are substances that play a role in signal transmission in the nervous system (or neurotransmitters), such as (nor) adrenaline and dopamine.
